Share a drive with the technician

The technician asks for a folder or USB stick from your computer. You choose yourself what he may see — or you refuse. The default is read only.

What it is for

The technician wants to work with files from your computer — from your USB stick, for example. Then a question appears on your side. You choose which folder he may see. Only this folder, nothing above it. Or you refuse.

What you need

  • A running session with a technician.
  • You are sitting at the computer. Without your consent there is no sharing.
  • Nothing else. You do not have to set anything up.

How to do it

  1. The window Laufwerk für den Techniker freigeben? (Share a drive with the technician?) appears. It says who is asking: "… möchte ein Laufwerk oder einen Ordner dieses Geräts bei sich als Laufwerk einbinden." (… would like to mount a drive or folder of this device as a drive on his side.)
  2. You do not want that? Click Ablehnen (Deny). Then he gets nothing.
  3. You want it? Choose the folder or the USB stick: - Click a drive or a folder to go into it. - Eine Ebene höher (One level up) goes back.
  4. Should the technician also be allowed to change and delete there? Then set the tick Schreiben erlauben (Allow writing). Without the tick he may only read. That is the safe choice.
  5. Click Diesen Ordner freigeben (Share this folder).

How you know it worked

  • Windows: a small window appears at the bottom right, for example "Max liest Ihr Laufwerk „E:“." (Max is reading your drive "E:") — with the button Beenden (Stop).
  • Mac and Linux: the small BrowserDesk card shows a note about the sharing at the bottom.

How to stop the sharing

  • Windows: click Beenden in the small window at the bottom right. Closing this window also stops the sharing.
  • Everywhere: switch off the tile Datei (File) in the session window. That stops every drive sharing at once.
  • When the session ends, the sharing ends too.

What the other side sees

The technician sees your folder as a drive, for example "BrowserDesk – <your computer> <folder>". If you refused, he only sees that it did not work.

Good to know

  • The technician cannot answer this question for you. While it is open, his clicks and keys do not reach your computer.
  • Without an answer everything stays closed. After two minutes the question counts as refused.
  • Each request is asked separately. A yes only applies to this one sharing.
  • The question window names "Laufwerk-Freigabe beenden" and "Dateien" as ways to stop. On your side they are called Beenden (small window on Windows) and the tile Datei (session window).
  • If someone calls you and asks for sharing although you did not want help, he may be after your data. Then click Ablehnen.

If it does not work

You seeWhat it means
No question appears, the technician says "Am Gerät kann niemand zustimmen …" (Nobody at the device can consent)BrowserDesk only shows the question when you are signed in and the BrowserDesk window is running. It does not work at the lock screen.
The technician says "BrowserDesk am Gerät aktualisieren" (Update BrowserDesk on the device)Your BrowserDesk is too old for this function. Ask your IT for an update.
The small window with Beenden is gone, but the technician is still readingSwitch off the tile Datei in the session window — or end the session (F4).
