Use hardware encoding (H.264) and 60 frames per second
With H.264 the device's graphics card encodes the picture — that takes almost all the load off its processor. You choose it explicitly.

What it is for
Normally the device encodes the picture with the VP8 method on its processor. With H.264 the device's graphics card does this: measured on a Windows computer with an NVIDIA card, the processor load there dropped by about 95 %. The price: your own computer needs about twice as long to decode as with VP8. That is why you choose H.264 explicitly — the default "Auto" stays with VP8.
What you need
- Controlled system: Windows with a graphics card that can encode H.264. Mac and Linux keep sending VP8.
- Exactly one viewer in the session and no recording (E19).
- Viewer: the program or the browser. The item only appears if your device can decode H.264.
- Not with Alle Monitore (All monitors, E1).
How to do it
In the running session (program):
- Open Ansicht (View) in the bar.
- Under CODEC choose H.264 (GPU am Ziel) (H.264, GPU at the target).
- Back: VP8 (schnell) (VP8, fast) or Auto.
In the browser: Ansicht → codec choice → H.264 (GPU).
Default for new sessions:
- Program: EinstellungenAllgemein (Settings > General) → card Video & Verbindung (video & connection) → STANDARD-CODEC (default codec).
- Browser: gear icon → Vorgaben für neue Sitzungen (defaults for new sessions) → Codec: H.264 (GPU).
- Phone/tablet: Einstellungen (Settings) → Standard-Codec (default codec).
How you know it worked
- The program reports "Codec angefragt: …" (codec requested). Whether the device really sends H.264 is decided by the device.
- In the Analyse-Overlay (analysis overlay, E3) the "Host" line shows the codec the device actually uses.
Good to know
- "Auto" means VP8 — for every viewer available today. Every device can decode VP8, and the device adapts it to the connection during the session. H.264 only comes when chosen explicitly.
- With two or more viewers or during a recording it stays with VP8, even if you chose H.264.
- If decoding fails, your program switches the session back to VP8 by itself. The session continues.
- Only whoever is in control can change the codec.
- 60 frames per second: the device captures at 60 frames per second. Measured, 34 to 55 frames per second arrived with H.264 and 41 to 49 with VP8. How many you get also depends on how much changes on the screen.
- Only an NVIDIA graphics card has been measured. Intel and AMD graphics have not been measured.
If it does not work
| You see | Meaning and fix |
|---|---|
| No CODEC section under Ansicht | Your computer cannot decode anything but VP8. H.264 cannot be chosen then. |
| The overlay still shows VP8 | Someone else is watching, the session is being recorded, Alle Monitore is selected, the device is not a Windows device or its graphics card cannot do it. Or your program fell back to VP8 after an error. |
| Your own computer becomes sluggish with H.264 | Decoding costs you more than VP8. Go back to Auto. |
