What it is for
Sometimes one sentence is enough: "Please save your file for a moment." Every session has a chat for that. The technician writes in the session window, the person at the device sees the message and can reply.
What you need
- A running session (D2, D1 or D4).
- Technician: the BrowserDesk program on a computer or web access in the browser.
- At the device: BrowserDesk on Windows, macOS or Linux. No licence and no right in the console are needed.
How to do it
Technician (in the session window)
- Click the speech-bubble icon Chat in the session bar. The Chat panel opens on the right; with no messages yet it shows Noch keine Nachrichten (No messages yet).
- Type into the field "Nachricht…" (message) at the bottom.
- Send with Enter or the arrow icon.
- Replies appear on the left of the panel. When the panel is closed, a number on the icon shows how many messages are unread.
In the browser it is the same: icon Chat in the bar, type, Senden (Send).
Person at the device
- When a message arrives, a notice "Chat: …" with the text appears at the bottom of the BrowserDesk window — for about 6 seconds.
- To reply, click Antworten (Reply) in the notice.
- In the window Antwort senden (Send reply) type the answer and click Senden (Send) — or Abbrechen (Cancel).
How you know it worked
- Your own message is on the right of the chat panel.
- The reply of the person at the device appears on the left below it.
What the other side sees
The person at the device sees your message as a notice "Chat: …" in the BrowserDesk window. There is no history on that side — each message arrives on its own.
Good to know
- The person at the device can only reply. They cannot start a chat themselves.
- A message has at most 2000 characters. Control characters are removed, empty messages are not sent.
- A reply goes to everyone connected to the device at that moment.
- Messages count as activity: if the device disconnects idle sessions (E32), every message keeps the session open.
- With sound: if you would rather talk, see E13.
If it does not work
| You see | Meaning and fix |
|---|---|
| The person at the device says they see no message | The notice appears in the BrowserDesk window. If BrowserDesk runs on the Windows device as a service or as the quick-support program, the device currently does not show incoming messages. Continue by phone or by voice (E13). |
| The notice was already gone | It disappears after about 6 seconds. Send the message again. |
