Copy files and pictures with Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V

Copy files or a screenshot at one end and paste them at the other — in both directions, up to 100 MB without asking.

What it is for

You select files in Explorer, Finder or a file manager, press Ctrl+C — and paste them on the other computer with Ctrl+V. The direction does not matter. The same applies to a copied picture, such as a screenshot or "Copy image" in a browser.

What you need

  • Viewer: the BrowserDesk program on Windows, Mac or Linux. The browser can do it in a limited way (see below); phones and tablets cannot — there only text works (E10).
  • Controlled system: Windows, Mac or Linux with BrowserDesk 20261002.8 or later (Mac 20261003.6 or later). Pictures from 20261008.17.
  • Clipboard AND file transfer must be allowed at the device: EinstellungenSicherheit (Settings > Security) → Interaktion & Berechtigungen (interaction & permissions) → Zwischenablage synchronisieren (sync clipboard) and Dateiübertragung erlauben (allow file transfer). If either is off, only text works.

How to do it

From you to the device (program):

  1. Select files on your side and press Ctrl+C (Mac: Cmd+C).
  2. Up to 100 MB the device fetches them at once. Above that the bar shows the message "… ist groß für die Zwischenablage." (is large for the clipboard) with the button An Host übertragen (transfer to host) — only then do they go.
  3. Click the target spot in the device's picture (e.g. a folder in Explorer) and press Ctrl+V.

From the device to you (program):

  1. Select files in the device's picture and press Ctrl+C.
  2. Up to 100 MB your program fetches them at once and reports "Vom Host in die Zwischenablage: … — mit Strg+V einfügen" (from the host into the clipboard — paste with Ctrl+V). Above that "Am Host kopiert: …" (copied on the host) appears with Übernehmen (take over).
  3. Go to the target spot on your side and press Ctrl+V.

Pictures work the same way: copy, paste at the other end — for example into Paint, Word or an e-mail. The message then reads "Bild vom Host in der Zwischenablage (…) — mit Strg+V einfügen" (picture from the host in the clipboard).

In the browser:

  • From the device to you: if someone copies files on the device, the browser reports "Am Host kopiert: … — „Zwischenablage holen“ lädt sie herunter" (copied on the host — "fetch clipboard" downloads them). Then Eingabe (Input) → Zwischenablage holen (fetch clipboard): the files arrive as downloads (folders without subfolders). A picture arrives as a PNG file.
  • From you to the device: copy files on your side, click into the session picture and press Ctrl+V — the browser sends them to the Downloads folder on the device. Zwischenablage senden (send clipboard) sends a copied picture there too.

How you know it worked

In the bar next to Trennen (Disconnect) there is a message with a coloured dot: green done, yellow waiting for your decision, orange running, red error. After sending to the device, for example "… Dateien (…) liegen in der Zwischenablage des Hosts" (… files are in the host's clipboard).

Good to know

  • Limits: at once up to 100 MB, above that only on your click; at most 2 GB in total, at most 500 MB per file, at most 2000 entries. A picture at most 64 MB.
  • Only the receiver fetches. Large amounts never go over the line unasked — you always decide.
  • Folders are copied with their content (in the program).
  • Incomplete means nothing. If a transfer breaks off, nothing lands in the clipboard — better no files than half of them.
  • Files come before pictures: if you copied a picture file in Explorer, it arrives as a file, not as a picture.
  • Other side on an older version: a picture arrives there as a PNG file.
  • Clipboard folder: received files sit in an intermediate folder until you paste them; it is emptied on the next receipt. Paste them with Ctrl+V to their destination instead of working there.
  • Log: every transfer is recorded with name, number and size, never with content.

If it does not work

You seeMeaning and fix
"Kopierte Dateien gehen nicht über die Zwischenablage (…) — bitte über die Dateiübertragung senden." (copied files cannot go via the clipboard — please use file transfer)Over the limits (too large, too many files). Use the file manager (E8) — or copy fewer at once.
"Zwischenablage (Dateien): …" in redThe device cannot transfer the copy and states the reason. Usually too many or too large files.
Ctrl+V on the device pastes nothing, no messageClipboard or file transfer is off at the device — then only text works.
Copied on a Linux device, nothing arrives on your sideUnder Wayland, BrowserDesk on the device does not reliably notice copies made by other programs. Use the file manager (E8).
"Vom Host empfangen, aber die Zwischenablage ließ sich nicht setzen" (received from the host, but the clipboard could not be set)The files arrived, but your clipboard could not be filled. Copy again on the device.
"Kopiertes Bild geht nicht über die Zwischenablage (…) — bitte als Datei senden." (copied picture cannot go via the clipboard — send it as a file)The picture is too large. Save it as a file and send it with Datei senden (send file, E8).
