Transfer files in both directions
Send a file to the device quickly or copy back and forth between both computers in the file manager — in the browser also by dragging into the window.

What it is for
You want to give the device a file — an installer, a document — or fetch a file from it. There are two ways: Datei senden (send file) for the quick way to the device, and the Dateimanager (file manager), where you browse the folders on both computers and copy in both directions.
What you need
- A running session. The controlled system does not matter (Windows, Mac, Linux).
- File transfer must be allowed at the device: EinstellungenSicherheit (Settings > Security) → card Interaktion & Berechtigungen (interaction & permissions) → Dateiübertragung erlauben (allow file transfer).
- Viewer: program and browser can do both. On iPhone and iPad there is Datei senden via the system's file picker; not yet on Android phones.
How to do it
Quickly send a file to the device (program):
- In the bar Dateien (Files) → Datei senden.
- In the window Datei senden go to the file (Eine Ebene höher — one level up — leads up to the drive list) and click it.
- Senden (Send). The file arrives in the Downloads folder of the user signed in at the device.
File manager (program), both directions:
- Dateien → Dateimanager. On the left is Dieser Computer (this computer), on the right Entfernter PC (remote PC).
- Go to the folder you want on both sides.
- Select a file and copy it with the arrow in the middle: - to the right Zum entfernten PC senden (send to the remote PC) — into the folder open on the right; - to the left Auf diesen Computer holen (fetch to this computer) — into the folder open on the left.
- The line at the bottom shows the progress and then the result.
In the browser:
- Dateien → Datei senden opens the browser's file picker; you can choose several files.
- Or drag files from Explorer or Finder into the session window. "Dateien hier ablegen" (drop files here) appears; the files go to the Downloads folder on the device.
- Dateien → Dateimanager: for the left side first click Ordner wählen… (choose folder …) — the browser may only show your folders once you grant one.
On iPhone or iPad: Dateien → Datei senden opens the system's file picker. Received files are in the Files app under BrowserDesk; the message afterwards offers Teilen (Share).
How you know it worked
- Program: at the bottom of the file manager "Gesendet: …" (sent) or "Datei übertragen (…)" (file transferred); after fetching, "Datei geladen: …" (file loaded) with the location.
- Browser: with several files the status line reports "… Dateien gesendet" (files sent).
What the other side sees
- The file appears in the Downloads folder or in the folder you chose in the file manager.
- The session window on the device has the switch "Datei" (file). If the person switches it off, no transfer goes through any more (F1).
Good to know
- Single files only, no whole folders. At most 500 MB per file; empty files are not transferred.
- Protected places: some files the device never hands out — such as BrowserDesk's own data, password stores, SSH keys and browser profiles. Nothing can be written into the Startup or Windows folder.
- Log: every transfer is recorded in the relay's log with file name and size.
- Files the person at the device puts out for you: E9. Copying with Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V: E11. A whole stick or folder as a drive: E22.
If it does not work
| You see | Meaning and fix |
|---|---|
| "Datei zu groß oder leer" (file too large or empty) | The file is larger than 500 MB or has 0 bytes. Zip and split large files, or mount them as a drive (E22). |
| "Datei zu groß, leer oder inzwischen geändert" (too large, empty or changed meanwhile) | When fetching: the file changed on the device or is too large. Refresh the list (Aktualisieren) and fetch again. |
| The arrow in the file manager stays grey | No file is selected (folders do not work) or a transfer is still running. To fetch, a folder must be open on the left. |
| Nothing arrives, no message | File transfer is off at the device — in the settings or via the "Datei" switch in the session window. |
| Android: "Dateiauswahl auf diesem Gerät noch nicht verfügbar (Stufe M3)." (file picker not yet available) | Sending files does not work on Android phones yet. Use a computer or the browser. |
