Scroll with the trackpad and use gestures on a phone or tablet

Two fingers on the laptop trackpad scroll on the device; on a phone you control with taps, drags, zoom and a mouse wheel at the edge.

What it is for

On a laptop you scroll with two fingers on the trackpad — that should work on the device just like the mouse wheel. On a phone or tablet there is no mouse: there you move the pointer with your finger, click by tapping, zoom with two fingers and scroll with a mouse wheel at the edge of the picture.

What you need

  • A session in which you are in control. The controlled system does not matter (Windows, Mac, Linux).
  • Laptop trackpad: the BrowserDesk program, version 20260923.1 or later. Confirmed with a Windows laptop; a Mac as the viewer has not been tested.
  • Gestures: the app on a phone or tablet, or the browser on a phone.

How to do it

On a laptop (program): swipe with two fingers on the trackpad, vertically or horizontally. The device scrolls where the pointer is. If the pointer is over the bar, nothing happens on the device.

On a phone or tablet (app): the default is trackpad mode — the phone display works like a trackpad:

GestureTrackpad mode (default)Direct mode

Tapleft click at the pointerleft click where the finger is

  • Switch: tab Einstellungen (Settings) → Trackpad-Modus (trackpad mode), or in the session Steuerung (Control) → Trackpad-Modus.
  • Mouse wheel at the edge: a strip stands to the right of the picture. Dragging on it scrolls on the device. In the bar at the bottom, Mausrad ausblenden / Mausrad einblenden (hide / show mouse wheel) hides and shows it.
  • Undo the zoom: 1× in the bar at the bottom.
  • A single right click by tap: Eingabe (Input) → Rechtsklick (nächster Tipp) (right click — next tap); the next tap becomes a right click.

In the browser on a phone: a hint in the picture sums it up: sliding a finger moves the pointer, a tap clicks, a long press is a right click, two fingers scroll, two fingers apart zoom. Steuerung → Trackpad-Modus switches between moving the pointer and tapping directly.

How you know it worked

  • The content on the device scrolls with your fingers.
  • On the phone a ring shows where the next tap will click.

Good to know

  • A two-finger gesture is either zoom or scroll, not both. The app decides once, shortly after the fingers touch down, and keeps that until you lift them. Afterwards the last finger lifted does not trigger a click.
  • Pinch-zooming on the laptop trackpad has no effect in the program — only scrolling.
  • On a Windows touch screen (program) there is only vertical scrolling, no zoom and no bar with special keys.
  • Half a scroll step left over at the end of a movement is dropped; the picture does not jump afterwards.
  • Special keys on the phone: E5.
