Connect from the device list or address book — organise with tags

Devices you control often are one click away in “Recently used”, the address book, your access's device list or the history. In the console, tags sort devices into groups.

What it is for

If you look after the same computers again and again, you do not want to type the ID every time. BrowserDesk remembers every device you were connected to and shows the devices of your access as a list. One click connects — with the saved password if you let it save one. In the console you sort devices into groups with tags and connect straight from the device list.

What you need

  • BrowserDesk on your computer (Windows, macOS, Linux) or the app on your phone or tablet (D5).
  • For your access's devices in the program: a sign-in to the access with user and password (C2). With the shared access password alone the program does not show the list.
  • For tags and the console device list: an account in the console.
  • With Free, every session has to be confirmed at the device — also from the list.

How to do it

Way 1: "Recently used" on the start page

  1. Every successful connection ends up on the start page under Zuletzt verwendet (Recently used).
  2. A click on the tile connects. If you ticked Zugangsdaten speichern (Save credentials) when connecting, BrowserDesk fills in the password itself.
  3. The field Ziele durchsuchen… (Search targets…) filters by name, computer name and ID. The switch next to it toggles between tiles and list.
  4. The tile's menu (⋮) offers Verbinden (Connect), Umbenennen (Rename), Gespeichertes Passwort entfernen (Remove saved password — only if one is saved) and Entfernen (Remove).

Way 2: the address book

  1. Open Adressbuch (Address book) in the sidebar. It holds the same entries as "Recently used".
  2. Add a device by hand: Ziel hinzufügen (Add target) → in the window Neues Ziel hinzufügen (Add new target) enter the ID and a name → Hinzufügen (Add). The window does not ask for a password. It is saved on the first successful connection if Zugangsdaten speichern is ticked.

Way 3: your access's devices

  1. If you are signed in to the access with user and password, the Adressbuch shows "Zugang: …" (Access: …) below, with every device you may reach. Each tile says ONLINE, OFFLINE or BESETZT (busy).
  2. Click a device that is online: BrowserDesk connects with the password saved for this ID.
  3. If a device is offline and can be woken, it shows a power icon ("Aufwecken (Wake-on-LAN) und verbinden" — wake up and connect).
  4. The circular-arrow icon Geräteliste aktualisieren (Refresh device list) reloads the list.

Way 4: from the history

  1. Open Verlauf (History) in the sidebar. It lists finished sessions in both directions.
  2. For an outgoing session click Verbinden (Connect). BrowserDesk fills in ID and saved password on the start page. Then click Verbinden there.

Way 5: in the console — tags and connecting

  1. Open Devices in the console. On the left is the tree with your accesses and, below it, Tags.
  2. Add a tag: right-click a device → Manage → Edit. In the window Edit device enter the tags under Tags (comma-separated), for example "Building 1, Server", then Save.
  3. Filter by tag: click a tag in the tree. The list then shows only devices with that tag.
  4. Connect: click the play icon in the device's row — or right-click → Access → Connect.
  5. In the window enter the Device password (and the support reason if the access requires one). With Remember the password until this tab is closed the console does not ask again in this tab.
  6. Click Connect. The session opens in a new browser tab (D4).

On a phone or tablet the tab Mandant (access) lists the devices of the access. If no password is saved, the app asks for it when you tap (D5).

How you know it worked

  • The session window with the device's screen opens (from the console: a new tab).
  • The device then appears first under Zuletzt verwendet (Recently used).

What the other side sees

The same as with any connection by ID and password: depending on the settings, the dialog Zugriff erlauben? (Allow access?) and, during the session, the session window (F1).

Good to know

  • Where the saved password is kept: on Windows, encrypted for your Windows account, only on this computer. On Linux and macOS it is stored unencrypted in your user account's address book. Another Windows account or another computer cannot read it — there you type it again.
  • Password changed at the device: then the saved one is wrong. With Zugangsdaten speichern ticked, BrowserDesk replaces it on the next successful connection. Without the tick the old one stays.
  • Groups and tags only exist in the console. The program knows names but no tags. Umbenennen (Rename) in the program only applies to your own address book.
  • Which devices you see in the access's list is set by the administrator: all of them or only selected ones (B5).
  • "Remember the password" in the console only lasts until you close the tab. It changes nothing at the device.

If it does not work

You seeMeaning and fix
"Adressbuch: erst mit Anmeldung (Benutzer und Kennwort)" (address book only after sign-in with user and password)You joined the access only with the access password or a one-time code. Sign in with your user account (C2).
"Keine Geräte in diesem Zugang. Sobald sich Geräte anmelden, erscheinen sie hier." (no devices in this access yet)No device added yet, or none has been shared with you (B5).
"Keine Treffer für „…“." (no matches)The search term matches no entry. Clear the field.
Password is refused although it is savedThe password at the device changed, or you are on a different account. Type it again and tick Zugangsdaten speichern (H9).
"Device is offline — cannot connect" (console)The device is not signed in to the relay. Wake it with Wake up (Wake-on-LAN) in the device's menu, or try later.
"Please enter the device password." (console)The field was empty. The console does not connect without a password.
"Pop-up blocked — please allow pop-ups for this site and click Connect again."The browser prevented the new tab. Allow pop-ups for the console.
